How Natural Disasters are being Reflected on the Runway
2017 was full of many unforeseen catastrophes that devastated a countless amount of people around the world. Although these times are hard and cause distress, the art of fashion has once again created beauty from pain. While reviewing the SP18 and FA17 runway shows in preparation of the upcoming Fashion Weeks, I noticed that many pieces reflected the moods and feel of our environment after the many recent natural disasters.
Here are some of the looks that have been inspired by the many devastations.
The Heat is On
2017 was California’s most destructive and largest wildfire season ever. With the daily update on yet another fire, it was hard for many of us not to take notice. The burnt orange and rust hues seen on the runway can be seen as a depiction of the fire clouds and scenes from this misfortune.
Guardians of the Galaxy
With so much talk about Global Warming and Earth being distroyed, it’s no wonder so many designers’ thoughts are going up into the stars. These super galactic universal themed garments bring subconscious awareness to what’s happening on the Earth and what options are being explored explored outside of it.
Walk on Water
The recent Hurricanes have given our great blue sea a bad reputation, but the beautiful hues of turquoise and cyan have brought back the beauty of our waters when at rest. I personally loved the variants of this colorway on the Spring 2018 runways.
Brave the Storm
The many devastating events caused much of our land to be destroyed, and people all over the world are out of our basic life necessities (food, water, clothing and shelter). Although this is a hard time, we must always remember the their is a calm after the storm. Many of the black, leather and edgy designs shined light on the badass mentality one must take to fight their way through hard times.
